Reupholstering Versus Buying | Shannon Bieter Interiors

by Shannon Bieter, January 12, 2013

So many people I meet with ask if it’s worth reupholstering furniture.  Yes, if the piece is an antique or has sentimental value.  Sofas are expensive to reupholster.  You will need 14 to 25 yards of upholstery grade fabric depending on the frame style.  Upholstery-grade fabric ranges from $40.00 on up.  Depending on where you live, the median rate to reupholster is $1,000 for just the labor.  If the sofa needs extra padding the price will increase.  You really need to ask yourself is this worth it before taking the plunge to recover a used sofa.

Chairs, ottomans and benches are more affordable because they require less fabric and labor.
